Community Ginger Farm
Do you have some space in your garden to tend and care for a small ginger crop ?
We are looking for keen home gardeners to help share in a community wide ginger farm.
We will supply you with the planting material, support throughout the season and advice to get the most out of your ginger.
The deal — at the end of the season you will return in weight the amount of ginger that you started with and the rest is yours to eat, keep or share with your friends and neighbours.
Ginger is a relatively easy crop to grow but requires sunlight, healthy soil and regular watering.
We require you to have at least 3m2 to get started.
Drop into Wardell CORE to join in, talk with Venetia our Home Harvest coordinator and grab your plant stock.
Requirements for Growing Ginger :
Climate: Ginger is a tropical plant and thrives in warm, humid climates. It does not grow well in temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius but can be cultivated indoors or in a greenhouse in colder regions.
Temperature: The ideal temperature range for ginger growth is 20-30°C.
Moisture: Ginger requires plenty of moisture, so consistent watering or access to rainfall is essential for healthy growth.
Soil: Ginger prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 5.5-6.5. Amending the soil with organic matter or compost can improve its texture and richness.
Step-by-Step Guide for Growing Ginger :
Choose a suitable location: Select a spot in your garden that receives full sun to partial shade and is protected from strong winds.
Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil to a depth of 30 cm and amend it with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure.
Obtain ginger root: You can get ginger root from a grocery store. Choose plump and firm roots free from disease or rot.
Soak ginger root (optional): Soaking the ginger root in water or a stimulant like worm wee or seaweed solution overnight can stimulate growth.
Plant ginger root: Plant ginger root horizontally in the soil, with the buds or eyes facing up, and cover it with about 3 cm of soil. Space the ginger roots 20-25 cm apart.
Water regularly: Keep the soil consistently moist by watering deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions.
Fertilize: Apply a balanced organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to provide nutrients to the plant.
Mulch: Apply organic mulch around the ginger plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Harvest: Ginger is ready to harvest 8 to 10 months after planting when the leaves start to yellow and wilt. Carefully dig up the ginger with a garden fork and brush off the soil.
